Carl was working as an air taxi pilot, flying a Hoverwing, a wing-in-ground-effect craft, backwards and forwards across the bay and up and down the coast. After he picked up a nervous passenger, things just went crazy, and he wasn't in Perth anymore, or even in his own time. His passenger had stolen some technology, and its owners wanted it back.
