All around New Zealand there are statues of animals, fish, birds and even insects. But there are more statues and sculptures of dogs in New Zealand than anything else. Why is that? Dogs have played a central role in the lives of New Zealanders, from working farm dogs, to police dogs, loyal companions, mascots, little heroes and fictional dogs that have become part of our culture. In this book we look at the dogs that have been memorialised in public statues that have become community icons. Travelling the country, we trace the statues and the stories behind them to show how dogs trace our history and reflect our culture. There are wonderful stories for all ages that evoke fond memories of people and their dogs, and the unreserved love, loyalty and devotion these furry friends have given New Zealanders over the centuries.
