"Newport: Voices from an Evolving Community" is a 207-page book filled with stories and photos about the evolving history of the lakeside community of Newport, VT.Communities are in a constant state of evolution, and the city of Newport is no exception. When European settlers arrived in what is now Newport in the 1700s, they were not entering a no-man's land. The Lake Memphremagog basin is an important part of the Abenaki homeland, and the Abenaki people were here when European settlers arrived. Newport has also been an industrial railroad community, tourist destination, and retail center.Newport is currently undergoing probably one of the most challenging evolutionary periods in its history as it struggles to reinvent and reinvigorate itself as it continues to move further into the twenty-first century. This book includes a collection of interviews from people who have lived the history of Newport, some from horse and buggy days to modern times.
