More than half a century ago the Permanent Committee on the Oliver Wendell Holmes Devise decided that its principal purpose would be to commission a multi-volume work that would become a definitive history of the Supreme Court of the United States. Originally published by Macmillan, these volumes are being reprinted by Cambridge University Press with a new foreword by the General Editor, Stanley N. Katz. The project has developed into a thirteen-volume series, of which eleven volumes are currently available as part of this set.
