"This book explains state and federal regulations in a way that makes sense,"" Whitford says. ""It gives small business owners a place to start and tells them how to comply with the regulations." Whitford says this resource can save its users time and money. Usually businesses must hire a consultant or lawyer to be sure they are in compliance with safety, environmental and other regulations, or they have to assign employees to learn regulations. With this book, a series of yes or no questions help determine which regulations apply to a specific company situation. Traditionally people would get this information from meetings, associations, insurance companies or by word-of-mouth when others are fined. Whitford says these methods provide only bits and pieces and don¹t answer all questions about regulations affecting businesses. For a company to comply with regulations, owners and managers must know what the regulations are, what they are obligated to do and how they should do it.

Kay Nobbe, with HyGrade Excavating of Greensburg, Ind., oversees an effort by her company to ensure compliance with all regulations that affect the business. She contacted Whitford, and he suggested his book as an aid in identifying which regulations apply to them. "I think it¹s been very well written," Nobbe says. "We are trying to become OSHA compliant, and we¹re using it to benefit us in other aspects of our business, as well." Whitford says most people want to be in compliance, and will make the changes necessary when they know how. "This book should give people the peace of mind that if they are inspected, and if they are following the regulations, they should be in compliance for just about everything," he says.
