In Behind the Basket, feminist anthropologist Joseph C Wilson uses the WNBA as a metaphor for the struggle between the ideas of modernism and postmodernism in sport. Over the course of a 2019 season ethnography, Wilson examines the postmodern obstacles facing the WNBA and the struggle of the Seattle Storm in overcoming the need to push past injury, low attendance, and underappreciation in an ever-changing host city to enter the postseason following a 2018 championship win.
