This book describes a full-size crane and a model, designed and built by the author, that won a Very Highly Commended award at the Model Engineer Exhibition 2016. Here and there alongside the canals that criss-cross the lowlands of the UK, you will occasionally see a hand crane. There is a bewildering variety of detail, and it seems as if there are no two the same. They range from simple derricks lifting a few hundredweight to huge compound-geared cranes rated at several tons. This model represents a modestly sized crane (photos 2,3), rated at 15 cwt. (three-quarters of a ton or 750kg) which can be seen in a (partially) restored state in Fradley Staffordshire. The crane was built by J. Slee of Earlestown, Lancashire, The book includes fully detailed and dimensioned plans from which you may build a working model of the crane.
