Zhu argues that all rhetorics participate in the dynamics of power. It is pivotal to address how to subvert the systematic production of the Other, a power structure that is marked by an oppositional and essentialist understanding of subject positions and power relations--a structure that is reproduced in the West/non-West power hierarchy. Zhu proposes interconnectivity as a frame of power transformation. Interconnectivity stands for a relating-yet-separating relationship where difference and similarity jostle with one another in a way that moments of interdependence become more possible. It fosters a new discursive order of interdependence where there is no center to imagine from but subjects and rhetorics of all kinds can co-exist and co-evolve. Zhu examines the enactment of interconnectivity in different sites to illustrate and theorize how this power transformation can take place. She concretizes how one can act, think, and be to subvert othering and to bring forth a new discursive order and living environment where interlocutors are more likely to become interdependent.
