"This book will give the reader a comprehensive introduction to the world of aquaculture, from algae to fish passing through not so well-known groups of organisms such as sponges, worms, ascidia, jellyfish and echinoderms, just to name a few. There is an increasing demand for seafood around the world. It is consensual that a positive reply to this demand can only be met through aquaculture production. Furthermore, aquaculture is also constantly under pressure for its environmental impacts. Despite the remarkable advances in the last decades, the solution should not be simple intensification and scale augmentation. Solution needs to come from species diversification and technological development with a special focus on sustainability and integration. This book intends to cover and summarize in a single volume, the most recent advances not only in traditional farmed species (if we can call traditional to an activity only a few decades old) as well as in emerging species for aquaculture. A specific chapter is dedicated to the concept of Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture, its benefits and challenges.
