This is the story of a lapsed classical violinist who decided, from scratch, to become a bluegrass fiddler. Wayfaring Stranger joins Emma John on a three-fold journey - a physical one that will take her off the beaten track and through some of the most maligned and difficult-to-understand of the Southern states of America; an emotional journey from repressed Brit and lonesome city girl, to someone who finds happiness within a country community; and a musical journey, from highly-strung classical violinist to rollicking bluegrass fiddler. Bluegrass music has survived in a form of community, and a set of traditions, that no other Western music can boast. As for levels of musicianship, even the humblest and most remote of picking parlours can often rival anything in the professional music industry. But it's also a music that has its headquarters in the heart and soul of Trumpland, a place where the people the author encounters - and befriends - hold views and positions that she and many others find incomprehensible, not to say offensive. Hearing real-life human stories from the South is one element of her journey, but so is the tension between her admiration for the musicians she play with and the new political reality they have just voted into being.
