Dr Reiner Speck is a distinguished physician and one of the most prominent bibliophiles of our time. Over more than six decades, he has built an unparalleled collection of antiquarian literature, including world-famous collections of Renaissance poet and scholar Petrarch and French novelist Marcel Proust. However, Speck' s passion for collecting extends beyond books. Since the late 1960s, he has also been deeply committed to acquiring artists' books and contemporary art. His extensive collection of works on paper by the American artist Cy Twombly (1928- 2011) is especially noteworthy. Donald Ryan is an American art historian, editor and author. Sabine Schiffer is former director of Galerie Buchholz, Cologen, as well as Galerie Michael Werner, Cologne and is now owner of her own art consulting company. With experience of more than a decade in the art market, she is also developing projects with international collectors and galleries.

Cy Twombly (1928- 2011) was born in Lexington, Virginia, USA, and belongs to the post-abstract generation of Expressionists. He moved to New York in the early 1950s to study at the Art Students League. There he met Robert Rauschenberg, who encouraged him to attend Black Mountain College. After traveling through Europe, serving in the army, and a brief period in New York, Twombly moved to Italy in 1957. Twombly was better known in Europe than in the United States, but today he is recognized worldwide as one of the most innovative painters of his generation.
