The first major book devoted to the leading Chinese contemporary artist Liu Wei (b. 1972, Beijing, China; lives and works in Beijing, China) explores 21st-centurysocio-political concepts such as the contradictions of contemporary society and the transformation of developing cities and the urban landscape. In many of his sculptural and installation works, he uses found materials that are re-contextualized to draw new meanings out of the materials from which they are made. Liu Wei frequently uses geometric and architectural forms in his work as a reference to his urban surroundings. This book will cover the artist's overall practice and history, highlighting major moments, but focusing on the period from 2019 to 2025, which includes a major presentation at the 2019 Venice Biennale curated by the Hayward's Ralph Rugoff and the 2019-2020 two part institutional show at the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland, titled Invisible Cities, which was the artist's first solo exhibition in the United States. It will also feature his most recent work that will be showcased in an upcoming solo exhibition in New York.
