The existing literature on human trafficking is based (almost exclusively) on the United Nations Trafficking in Persons Protocol, 2000. However, detailed historical analysis of the preceding law on the subject is limited. Without reference to the origin and drafting history of the earlier treaties, the development of public international law to its present stage, the key areas in which that development occurred, and the pace at which it happened cannot be fully understood. This book analyses the development of public international law (1864-1950) relating to the trafficking of children for sexual exploitation through prostitution. It offers a detailed examination of the treaties and negotiations involved in the progressive conceptual development of law. The key areas emphasized include gender, race, administrative and legal measures, description of the act of trafficking, and connection between the act of trafficking and the exploitative end purpose of prostitution.
