William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor whose works have shaped literature and storytelling for more than four centuries. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon and baptized on April 26, 1564, he was the son of John Shakespeare, a tradesman and civic official, and Mary Arden, the daughter of a landowning family. He likely received a strong classical education at the local grammar school, studying Latin authors and rhetoric, which would later influence the structure and language of his writing. At eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway, and they had three children. After a period known as the "lost years," Shakespeare emerged in London as a successful actor and playwright. By the early 1590s, Shakespeare had established himself in the London theatre world as a leading member of the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He was not only a writer but also a shareholder in the company, giving him both creative influence and financial stability. Over the course of his career, he wrote approximately thirty-nine plays, along with numerous poems and sonnets.

His works are traditionally divided into comedies, histories, and tragedies, including enduring titles such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, Henry V, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear. His later plays, such as The Tempest, blend elements of tragedy and redemption, reflecting a more contemplative phase of his writing. Shakespeare's mastery of language and character set him apart from his contemporaries. He expanded the expressive power of English, introducing new words and phrases while crafting dialogue that remains vivid and memorable. His plays explore universal themes such as love, ambition, jealousy, and identity, giving them a timeless quality that continues to resonate with audiences today. Around 1613, he retired to Stratford, where he lived until his death on April 23, 1616. In 1623, his fellow actors compiled his plays into the First Folio, preserving many works that might otherwise have been lost. Through this collection and countless performances since, Shakespeare's voice has endured as one of the most influential in literary history.
