Forty years ago, there was no such thing as 24-hour news. In fact, the Big Three networks-CBS, NBC, and ABC-devoted only one half-hour every night to the evening news. If something major happened-a moon landing or an assassination-the networks covered that, but otherwise, TV programming was limited to entertainment and some feature news shows. On June 1, 1980, Ted Turner changed all that with the introduction of CNN. This new cable network covered news live 24 hours a day, in the U.S. and around the world.
