Song for America is a chronicle of the times set down in verse at times lyrical, at times formal. The poet-narrator captures significant moments of his generation, highlights of events that shape and have impacted history personal, social, and political. The poet at times takes the nation to task for its shortcomings invoking the words and ideals of its mission calling forth the spirit of Whitman as the nation's first great poet. Nothing in the country is sacrosanct even God makes a pit stop indirectly weighing in. Many themes are brought to bear in this poetic experiment of song, literature, and art-all things American are fair game: writing, poetry, music, artists, and their art. The social-political-personal stage is set on the streets of America with the world as its backdrop.
