The Other Tiger: Recent Poetry from Latin America is a refreshing new anthology of Spanish language contemporary poetry, focused particularly on writers born since 1945. Spanish and English versions of the poems are printed on facing pages, making the book especially valuable for students of Spanish literature, yet it also appeals to the general reader wanting to learn more about a poetry relatively neglected in English. The book is arranged thematically, with sections typically entitled 'Where We Live'; 'Memory, Childhood, Family'; the 'Natural World'; 'Politics, Journey and Exile'; 'Love, Sex and the Body'. Editor Richard Gwyn aims to avoid the restrictions of organizing the book by nationality or generations, preferring to explore the things poets have in common, and their differences. The Other Tiger consists of 90 poets from 14 countries, born over five decades. It includes work from Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Nicaragua, Chile, Uruguay, Venezuela, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Bolivia and El Salvador. Among the mix of poets are established names such as Juan Manuel Roca, Veronica Zondek, Mirta Rosenberg, Dario Jaramillo Agudelo, Giaconda Belli and Jorge Fondebrider. The younger poets featured include Andres Neuman, Siomara Espana, Frank Baez and Miguel Petrecca.

The result is an eclectic and catholic anthology of fine poetry and fine translation which offers the opportunity to discover relatively unknown poetries. The poems are at once exotic and other; they conjure big landscapes yet reference giant literary figures like Paz, Borges and Marquez; they explore the confessional and confront repressive political regimes. The Other Tiger, above all else is a discovery.
