Using a creative-critical approach, this book brings the Lindsay Diehl's grandmother's stories into dialogue with a canon of Chinese Canadian narratives. Whereas the family stories help the author to reflect on a matrilineal history that begins with immigration from China to Canada in 1874, the analysis of Chinese Canadian narratives allows her to examine how this canon has been imagined and produced. Guiding the book's creative and critical inquiries are the questions: How can stories help to give voice to, and make sense of, otherwise repressed and traumatized experiences? How can they facilitate a revisiting of Canada's colonial and racist pasts? Furthermore, how can these stories help trace the legacies of colonialism and racialization across familial generations? How can they help Asian Canadians bear some accountability in the oppression and displacement of Indigenous peoples? Through a postcolonial ethics of engagement, which necessitates intellectuals acknowledge their vested interests and limitations, this book draws inspiration from Asian Canadian literature and criticism. By encouraging readers to think rigorously about social location--and varying degrees of privilege and alterity--it sheds new light on and contributes to ongoing debates within the field. Using a creative-critical form to foreground the author's positioning as a third-generation Canadian-born woman of European and Chinese descent, Walking with My Grandmother reflects on and participates in the production of literary accounts, while also remaining committed anti-colonial, anti-racist, and feminist scholarship and praxis, as well as innovative ideas of responsibility, engagement, and solidarity.
