At the beginning of the 20th century, a materialist theory emerged thatdealt with the economic and social conditions of art production. Thiswas accompanied by a critique of the previous academic canon, nowconsidering formerly excluded everyday objects, children's drawings,folk art or photographs as the material conditions of a culture.Collections of artworks and artefacts became contexts of thought leadingto a redefinition of the relationship between history, form, andsociety. The contributions to this volume discuss how collections ofmaterials and pictures were tied to theoretical assumptions and had aneffect on thought processes. Examples cited include Frederik Antal,Walter Benjamin, Bernard Berenson, Wilhelm Fraenger, Sigmund Freud,Henri Foçillon, Vernon Lee, Meyer Schapiro and Aby Warburg. Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts entstand eine materialistische Theorie, die sich mit ökonomischen und sozialen Verhältnissen der Kunstproduktion auseinandersetzte. Mit ihr ging eine Kritik am Kanon einher, die zuvor ausgeschlossene Alltagsgegenstände, Kinderzeichnungen, Volkskunst oder Fotografien als materielle Bedingungen einer Kultur begriff.

Sammlungen von Kunstwerken und Artefakten wurden zu Denkumgebungen, um das Verhältnis von Geschichte, Form und Gesellschaft neu zu bestimmen.
