This Historical Fiction Series is set in the 1860s on the western frontier in the middle of the Dakota Territory. It is based on real people and real events, with embellishments to fill in the blanks between fact and fiction. In 1862, the Dakota tribes of Minnesota were being starved and purposely sickened. After three months of waiting for their annuities, they have finally had enough. The revenge-seeking uprising began on August 18th, 1862. Henson Wiseman is a settler who has followed the western migration to the Northeast corner of the Nebraska Territory. Staking two Homestead claims of 160 acres each in 1857. One is for his eldest son, Benjamin, and the other is for himself and his wife, Pheobe.

All he wants to do is raise his growing family in peace. But five years later, he is coerced into joining the US Army after the Territorial Governor calls up all able-bodied men. The recruiters tell the volunteers they will be building a fort near their settlements. A carpenter by trade, he answers the call. Nine months later, he finds himself on picket duty protecting the military's livestock. That morning, as he is relieved, he is given the news no man should ever receive. He and his daughter's horse have 240 miles ahead of them. He must ride alone through hostile Lakota territory, not knowing what lies behind every bend of the Missouri River or hill.

Once a peaceful farmer and craftsman, he is shaped by events beyond his control and the army bravado into a person seeking revenge. Both cultures have sufficient reason to seek revenge. There are many subplots, entertaining characters, and, of course, politics. Forbidden love and jealousy are not strangers to this story. Corruption runs rampant on the frontier, with no government oversight to reign it in. Traders and governors take advantage of the situation, with no regard for who could be harmed by their greed.
