Wildish: My Demon Rescue Cat and Other Untamed Pets, based on a true story, follows a disgruntled and formerly feral rescue cat named Jack and his frustrated and oft-ambushed pet owner Kay as the two seek couples counseling. Their interspecies therapy takes place over 18 months in a fictional Pet & Parent office, where empathetic therapist Dr. Lucinda Tilley mediates their sparring, negotiations, did-not-did-so dead ends, battles over boundary and territory and other funny-contentious face-offs. As is gradually revealed, the pair must also contend with grief and loss. At the therapist's urging, and in a quest for understanding her issues with Jack, Kay looks back on her life with other animals both wild and tame, including a New York City feral cat, a pet skunk, a white rat, fence lizards, an ant farm, and a brief obsession with paramecium discovered on a child's microscope. Her former sand crab-bait business goes awry, she loses her virginity under a cloudburst of insects, and stumbles on surprising and uncanny encounters with squid, dolphin, octopus, crows, gecko, monarch butterflies and other creatures in the wild. Presented as a therapy-setting story about a pet and his human, paired with a menagerie of woman-meets-animal stories, Wildish shows the many ways we find ourselves entwined in interspecies connections.
