The book series A Modern History of Politics and Violence scrutinises diverse histories of political violence in the modern world, from the French Revolution to the late 20th century. Volumes in the series - comprising both monographs and edited collections - aim to further our understanding of violence as part of the modern experience. The series has a global scope and seeks to challenge Eurocentric assumptions. Areas of particular interest include: modernisation and violence; colonial era violence and acts of aggression accompanying processes of decolonisation; political violence associated with communist and fascist movements and regimes; liberal cultures of political violence; and the use of violence to achieve emancipatory political ends. The series aims to explore both violence 'from above', directed by state institutions such as armies or law enforcement agencies, and violence 'from below', developed by a wide range of individuals and groups. Volumes in the series also question the cultural foundations of violence, and how perceptions of gender, race, class, community, and memory can be used to legitimate violent acts. In line with its interest in novel methodological approaches, the series encourages volumes that seek to redefine, broaden, or challenge extant definitions of violence. Finally, the series also examines the impact of political violence on its victims, as well as its lasting consequences.
