A NEW GENERATION OF VOICES ON EXISTING BETWEEN CULTURES, BETWEEN DREAMS OF THE PAST AND HOPES FOR THE FUTURE Between Dreams is a ground-breaking collection of fresh, progressive perspectives on Asian diaspora histories and their contemporary legacies in New Zealand - the ways Asian-New Zealanders are continually remaking what it means to be 'Asian' in Aotearoa. The contributors represent a new generation of scholars, activists, artists, curators, journalists, doctors and unionists, whose perspectives and intersectional experiences break away from colonial framings of ethnic histories and the 'model minority' narratives - a response to the need to progress knowledge of diverse Asian New Zealand histories. The essays are illustrated by 'objects of resistance and representation' from the collections of Te Papa. These stories combine celebrated histories of 'successful' Asian migrants with those about people, events and perspectives that are told for the first time, to challenge our assumptions about who is (or isn't) 'Asian'. From Asian activism in Aotearoa, including in support of M¿ori sovereignty and human rights and union movements, to global histories of colonising and colonisation which impact upon contemporary race relations, the diverse voices, objects and stories in Between Dreams aim to move, challenge and inspire.
