First settled in the 1880s, Vancouver's Chinatown is one of the oldest and largest in Canada. The Province of British Columbia and the City of Vancouver have applied for the neighbourhood to become the first Chinatown in the world to obtain a UNESCO world heritage site designation. Chinatown serves as a site of living heritage, where its preservation helps society honour and celebrate cultural traditions, and language. Donna Seto grew up in Vancouver, frequenting Chinatown with her parents as a child. She is a self-taught artist who returned to her love of drawing during the pandemic lockdown. She started posting her illustrations online and garnered a following on social media. Seto sells her artwork as greeting cards and prints. Since March 2022, she has sold over 700 greeting cards that are available at retailers such Massy Books, Dr.
Sun Yat-Sen Classical Garden, Chinatown Storytelling Centre, and the Vancouver Pen Shop. Seto also does custom orders for art prints and plans on releasing select prints on her website for purchase. She had an exhibition of her prints at THIS Gallery in Vancouver in February 2024. Influenced by historical photographs found in the Vancouver Archives as well as Fred Herzog's photography, each colourful building illustration is hand-drawn with ink and watercolour on watercolour paper, digitally scanned and edited. The book includes playful and charming guides to dim sum, shopping at Asian groceries, Chinese BBQ meats and pastries that will be accompanied by colourful and cute spot illustrations.
