"Midwives and Fairies: The Folklore of Childbirth in Ireland and Great Britain" is based on extensive research in printed sources plus work in the archives of the Folklore Department at UCD. Because the book is written for a broad readership, it contains some introductory material on the oral tradition and the role of magic in oral culture. The threats from the Otherworld by witches and fairies had to be managed by the careful observance of taboos and the use of blessings and prayer charms often managed by the midwife, a key figure in the birth process. Her knowledge of the supernatural was considered as important as her obstetrical skills. The study also shows the degree to which birth was a women-centered event, although the whole community might be involved in the various stages of the birth cycle, from conception to postpartum rituals celebrations.
