"The concept of Black Safe Spaces from Hush to Digital Harbor highlights the ongoing struggle of Black individuals to find acceptance and security within environments that often exclude them. It sheds light on how Black people are marginalized within public spaces simply by existing, emphasizing the urgent need to recognize safety as an inherent right rather than a privilege. This exploration delves into various perspectives, particularly focusing on the resilience and activism of Black women in response to racial adversity. Inspired by hush harbor legacies of enslaved Black women such as Milla Granson- enslaved in 1816, established a "midnight" school for enslaved people where she taught them how to read and write when this was illegal in Mississippi- to the contemporary attempts in the digital realm by Black womxn social justice activists, Black Safe Spaces in Hush to Digital Harbor examines how Black women within times of racialized crisis continue to construct spaces that reaffirm the humanity of Black folks while dually mobilizing within them to bring about positive and life-changing responses as well as effective and efficient calls to action. As racialized crisis continues to place Black lives in violent circumstances, how have Black women navigated a geography that is not inclusive and abnormalizes Black people in relation to the public sphere for simply existing? This work examines this from multiple aspects and articulates this tradition in Black literature and rhetoric, digital ethnographic study, and cultural media. These diverse genres demonstrate how Black women apply safe space practices in thematic aspects. The works presented make sense of moments of crisis and the responses of Black women as pivotal and necessary for survival"-- Provided by publisher."In Hush to Harbor: Black Sanctuary from Slavery to Trumps America traces the enduring tradition of Black communities creating sanctuaries-spaces of safety, care, and resistance-from the hidden hush harbors of the slavery era to the digital havens of the present day.

These sanctuaries, whether physical or virtual, have served as places to strategize, grieve, heal, and imagine new futures in the face of ongoing racial violence. Drawing on history, cultural analysis, and personal insight, this book reveals how these spaces have evolved in form but remained constant in purpose: to preserve Black life and dignity. It also confronts the heightened urgency of such sanctuaries during the Trump era, when state-sanctioned racism and emboldened white nationalism reshaped the landscape of resistance. In Hush to Harbor offers not just a chronicle of survival, but a blueprint for protecting and nurturing Black refuge in the twenty-first century and beyond"-- Provided by publisher.
