Raised in East St. Louis, Illinois, just east of the Mississippi River, I learned early to dream beyond the boundaries of my surroundings. Born one of five children to Bennie and Lucille Johnson, my foundation was shaped by faith and perseverance values that taught me to move forward even when the destination was unclear. In December 1982, I answered a call greater than myself and entered the United States Army, committing to a life of service that would define my character for 37 years until my retirement on June 1, 2020. Alongside my husband, Calvin, who served 28 years and also retired as a Sergeant Major, we raised two sons, Stoney and Bryant. We are proud grandparents to my first grandson Bryson and legal guardians to my great-niece, Savannah. Today, we continue to serve as Department of Defense professionals. I am currently employed as a senior research analyst with the Logistics Management Institute, working under the Secretary of War at the Pentagon.

My life reflects the Hero's Journey, a path of growth that requires faith before clarity and courage before comfort. Through that journey, I learned leadership is not defined by rank, but by responsibility, grounded in integrity, humility, and putting people first. A Soldier for Life and a servant in the Army of our Lord and Savior, this memoir invites readers to trust their calling, embrace life's challenges, and move forward with purpose and conviction.
